Multiple fatalities in plane crash at First Flight Airport in Kill Devil Hills

OUTER BANKS, N.C. – Authorities have confirmed “multiple fatalities” in a single-engine plane crash that was attempting to land at Wright Brothers National Memorial First Flight Airport Saturday afternoon, according to the National Park Service.

As the plane attempted to land around 5 p.m., according to passersby, it crashed in a wooded area nearby and a fire caused the plane to burn, NPS said in a news release.

The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other local agencies assisted in extinguishing the fire. According to images posted to Outer Banks Facebook groups, smoke could be seen for miles above the trees.

The airport is closed until further notice and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation.
