Kathryn Grace was arrested in connection with the death of a newborn in Lodi

Kathryn Grace Copeland, 28, was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail following an investigation

LODI, Calif. – The person suspected of abandoning a toddler who was later found dead in Lodi has been arrested, according to Lodi police.

Police identified the suspect as Kathryn Grace Copeland, 28, after an investigation was launched after the deceased toddler was found in a parking lot on September 26.

Copeland was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on Friday and is being held on $5,000 bail on a charge of concealing or attempting to conceal an accidental death, according to jail records.

The baby was pronounced dead by first responders after employees at Commissary Azteca, a grocery store near Tokay and Sacramento streets, discovered the baby.

David Franco, one of the employees who found the baby, discovered the newborn's body lying on the concrete. When he saw the baby, he ran to his colleague Silva Gonzalez, who called 911 after seeing the baby on the ground.

“I was trying to get closer to the baby to see if he was alive,” Gonzalez said. “Because I didn’t think twice about it. I thought, if he's still alive, I'll take off my shirt and put him on my chest. But when I saw he wasn't moving, I didn't want to touch him, so I wouldn't have any problems with the police.”

Copeland is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday at 1:30 p.m
