HMD's Next Move is the Affordable Flagship?

Smashx_60 has leaked rendering

It looks like HMD Global is adjusting its strategy, which has previously been focused on affordable, repairable devices. According to a trusted leaker, smashx_60HMD is reportedly working on a device that could include some flagship elements. While the leaked specs don't indicate any groundbreaking innovations, they're still causing a stir. Could it be the previously leaked device similar to the Lumia 1020?

The device could feature Qualcomm's SD8s3 SoC, which leans towards the higher end of the spectrum, accompanied by a quad-camera assembly – unusual for the usual budget offerings. Additionally, the possible addition of pogo pins hints at modular functionality, which could mean either accessories or a form of expanded usability for professional or creative purposes.

HMD “Moon Night” or TA-1691

  • – P-OLED FHD+, 144 Hz
  • – SD8sGen3 SoC
  • – Quad camera setup
  • – POGO pin, 5G, dual speakers, aluminum frame, etc

Despite these seemingly “premium” aspects, HMD may still be sticking to its core principles of affordability and repairability. The exact pricing or positioning remains unclear, but this could be their attempt to move into a higher-end segment while still focusing on their strengths: durability and easy-to-use repairs.

What we know so far is largely based on leaks, but the direction seems intriguing and could make the HMD portfolio's night a little easier. Could this be HMD's first step into offering mid- to high-end products while maintaining its budget-conscious and repair-focused ethos? Time will tell, but this could potentially attract a new audience to the company's product range.
