VIDEO: Vancouver FC struggles to a draw against Calgary

Neither Vancouver FC nor Cavalry could afford a goal in Saturday's (September 28) game in Calgary.

A clean sheet could potentially prove disastrous for Cavalry's title chances, while for Vancouver it would mean slipping even further away from a playoff spot.

The result was an ideal result for both teams, a goalless draw.

With the point scored at home, Cavalry confirmed its place in the playoffs of this year's Canadian Premier League season.

Vancouver goalkeeper Callum Irving ensured his team left Alberta with a point and a clean slate, making a series of impressive saves en route to being named player of the match.

The Eagles are currently in sixth place, just one point behind the final playoff spot currently occupied by Pacific FC.

With three games left this season, Vancouver could still clinch the final playoff spot.

Vancouver left guard James Cameron had 11 defensive tackles, three interceptions, three tackles and two clearances.

“I think it's easy to look at a team that has lost four in a row and write them off prematurely, but at the end of the game we're going to give it our all as long as we're still mathematically in the playoffs. That's what we did and we will do our best,” said Cameron.

Vancouver is the youngest team in the CPL and has only been in existence for two years.

Head coach Afshin Ghotbi commented: “If you look at this league as a six-year-old, all the teams are six-years-old and we are like a two-year-old toddler constantly trying to catch up to reach the standards. “We have to play with the top teams compete in this league.”

Ghotbi says starting a new club is about “finding more diamonds in the rough at the right age, giving them the time, the support, the encouragement and hopefully the training to produce the internationals we want and the results to achieve.”

Next up, Vancouver travels to the other side of the country on Saturday, October 5th to take on the Halifax Wanderers in an East vs. West Coast clash that could decide the playoff spots.
