Police pursuit on I-15 ends in fatal rollover accident

LAYTON – A woman is dead and her 3-year-old son was airlifted with life-threatening injuries after a police chase crashed on I-15 early Sunday.

At about 7:30 a.m., a Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted a Dodge Caravan that police had been searching for and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the woman driving the van would not stop, according to UHP Capt. Chris Simmons. The van attempted to exit I-15 at Antelope Drive in Layton but rolled because of the high speed, he said.

The woman and her 3-year-old son were both ejected from the vehicle, Simmons said. The woman died at the scene and the boy suffered serious injuries and was flown to a nearby hospital.

Investigators say they're not sure if the woman was wearing a seatbelt, but they know the child wasn't properly restrained in the car seat.

The identities of the mother and son were not released Sunday afternoon.
