Who was voted off the mountain?

In CBS' new reality competition series, a group of strangers must work together to climb a mountain in New Zealand's Southern Alps. But only a select few will actually make it to The Summit.

During their journey, participants carry a cash prize of $1 million, which is distributed evenly among them in backpacks as they reach multiple checkpoint camps. In the camps they have to vote each other out. Along the way, they have to overcome obstacles and are forced to make difficult decisions presented by the so-called “mountain guard”.

If the entire group of remaining participants fails to reach the summit of Mount Head within 14 days, they will all go home empty-handed.

At the start of Sunday's premiere episode, 16 players embark on the adventure of a lifetime, but at the end there are only 14 of them left. Here's what happened. (If you don't like spoilers, this isn't the story for you.)

What happened at the premiere of “The Summit”?

Unrest within the group arises fairly quickly, as some players move slower than others and personalities clash. But in the first challenge, which involved crossing a suspension bridge in pairs, they are forced to work together.

Beckylee Rawls, a 29-year-old construction worker from San Diego, is chosen to lead the team through the obstacle. After meeting Rose Mattie, an Arizona Army veteran, as her partner, she must decide which couples will cross paths next.

With 15 players left after a medical evacuation, Rawls realizes that one will be left behind. 52-year-old East Texas teacher Bo Martin ends up alone with everyone else on the other side.

Then “The Mountain Keeper” presents the group with their first difficult decision: leave Martin behind to speed up their pace, or help him cross. Despite fears that Martin would slow the group down, the majority decide not to leave any man behind.

At the end of the day, after overcoming their first obstacle, the group ultimately fails to reach the first checkpoint camp and spends the night in bivouac sleeping bags along the way.

Who was medically evacuated from The Summit?

Media director Tony Reyes, 36, became the first contestant to exit the season after fainting on the first day.

The trip became too much for the Austin marathon runner, who insisted he wouldn't mind if they waited another five minutes. Ultimately, despite Reyes' persistence, the medical staff pulled him from the game.

“Tony didn’t give up. His body stopped,” Martin said. “That hit me because that could be any of us.”

With his elimination, the money he had with him was also lost, reducing the total prize pot to $937,500. (The prize money is only reduced if someone gives up or is medically evacuated, but not if they are voted out.)

Who was voted out of The Summit?

On the second day, the group reached the first of nine checkpoints where they were treated to food and wine. Their joint celebration was short-lived when host Manu Bennett announced that they would vote out one candidate and split the money evenly.

Martin was the obvious choice until Mattie found the chopping block after rubbing several others the wrong way. Mattie insisted she wanted to vote out MMA referee Jennye Stirlen, who she described as bossy. Unlike “Survivor,” there is no secret vote, so players are forced to vote before each other.

In the end, everyone voted for Mattie except Amy Stephens, a bank manager from South Carolina, who remained loyal to her fellow mother. Mattie emptied the money from her pocket and said a heartbroken goodbye to Stephens, rejecting everyone else's goodbyes.

“I didn’t want her fake hugs. “Do you want to get the knife out of my back?” Mattie said in her confessional. “The mountain will show people their true colors. Stay true to who you are.”

“The Summit” premiered on Sunday, September 29th from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. PT / 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ET.

For those who missed it, the season premiere will re-air on CBS on Wednesday, October 2nd from 9:30-11:00 PM (ET/PT), its future standard timeslot.
