Israel used US-made 900kg bombs in the assassination of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah | World News

The bombs Israel used in the Beirut airstrike that killed top Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah were US-made guided missiles, Reuters reported, citing a US senator.

Last week, 2,000 pound (900 kg) Mark 84 bombs, popularly known as bunker busters, struck Hezbollah's headquarters, according to Mark Kelly, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee.

“We're seeing increased use of guided munitions, JDAMs, and we continue to provide those weapons… The 2,000-pound bomb that was used, that's a Mark 84 series bomb, to take out Nasrallah,” he said quoted by Reuters.

JDAMs convert a standard unguided bomb into a guided weapon using fins and a GPS guidance system.

The United States, a long-time ally of Israel, has been its largest arms supplier – particularly since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas after the Palestinian militant group stormed Israel on October 7, killing thousands of people.

However, according to the White House, Israel did not warn them about the airstrike that killed Nasrallah in Beirut, and US President Joe Biden only found out about it when Israeli planes were already in the air, The Guardian reported.

Israel kills seven Hezbollah commanders within a week

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently intensified its attacks on Lebanon, killing at least seven Hezbollah commanders in a week. A day after Nasrallah's death in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, the Iran-backed militant group also confirmed the killing of Nabil Kaouk, deputy chairman of Hezbollah's Central Council. The group also said another senior commander, Ali Karaki, died in the attack.

Other Hezbollah commanders who died in the attacks include Ibrahim Akil, Ahmad Wehbe, Mohammad Surour and Ibrahim Kobeissi.

Meanwhile, Israel continued its bombing of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Sunday, killing over 100 people in one day. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, 105 people were killed and 359 injured in the attack.
