NOPD investigates fatal two-car crash at Chef Menteur

The NOPD is investigating a fatal two-car accident. This happened on Sunday around 8 p.m. on the Chef Menteur Highway. According to investigators, the driver of a Ford Fusion was driving at a high rate of speed when he crashed into the rear of a Nissan Maxima. The driver of the Ford left the road and then crashed into a tree and a telephone pole. According to police, the car overturned. According to NOPD, EMS took a woman to the hospital with serious injuries. There she was pronounced dead. A man who was also in the car was taken to hospital to be treated for what police believe were minor injuries. According to NOPD, it is currently unclear who was driving the vehicle. Investigators believe he will face a charge of assault on a police officer upon his release in connection with a standoff with police when officers arrived to investigate the accident. None of the Nissan's occupants reported injuries. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine the woman's official cause of death and identify her once her family is notified.
