US President Joe Biden called Israel's elimination of Hassan Nasrallah “justice”, a sentiment supported by Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

“Hassan Nasrallah and the terrorist group he led, Hezbollah, were responsible for the killings of hundreds of Americans during a four-decade reign of terror. “His death by an Israeli airstrike is a sign of justice for its many victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians,” President Biden said in an official statement on the Israeli airstrikes.

Kamala Harris called Nasrallah “a terrorist with American blood on his hands,” adding that his leadership destabilized the Middle East and led to the killing of countless innocents.

This comes amid reports that the Biden administration was uninformed about the attacks in Beirut that crushed Hezbollah forces that controlled much of Lebanon for decades. However, the USA did not let this deter them from their unwavering support of Israel in the war against Hamas.

Why the US Opposes Hezbollah: A Brief History

Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shiite militant group, emerged during the Lebanese civil war that broke out in 1975. Since its founding, Hezbollah has been active against US-backed forces. This offensive was followed by a series of deadly attacks on the United States, marking a crucial shift in relations between the United States and Hezbollah.

Tensions escalated in April 1983 when Hezbollah planned a targeted bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, killing dozens of people, including eight CIA employees.

Another attack of a similar nature in October 1983 killed over 200 soldiers and injured 60, mostly US Marines.

In 1985, a Trans World Airlines flight was hijacked by a suspected Hezbollah member who fatally shot a U.S. Navy diver. The United States designated Hezbollah as a terrorist organization in 1997.

Israel used US-made 900kg bombs in the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah

The Israeli airstrike that led to Nasrallah's death reportedly used American-made munitions, particularly 2,000-pound (900 kg) Mark 84 bombs, commonly called bunker busters, Reuters news agency reported, citing a U.S -Senator.

Last week, 2,000 pound (900 kg) Mark 84 bombs, popularly known as bunker busters, struck Hezbollah's headquarters, according to Mark Kelly, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee.

Israel eliminates key Hezbollah commanders

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently intensified its attacks on Lebanon, killing at least seven Hezbollah commanders in a week.

A day after Nasrallah died in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, the Iran-backed militant group also confirmed the killing of Nabil Kaouk, deputy chairman of Hezbollah's Central Council. The group also said another senior commander, Ali Karaki, died in the attack.
