Longshoremen on the East Coast are on the brink of a strike for the first time in 47 years

The International Longshoremen's Association is preparing for what could be the first major port strike on the East Coast since 1977, when the United States' Atlantic ports were blocked for seven weeks.

If a contract with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) is not signed by the end of Monday, Every major U.S. port from Maine to the Texas Gulf Coast could close as more than 45,000 union workers picket at ports that handle about half of the goods that come to America by sea.

North Carolina residents watched as flooding swept away cars and buildings

As Helene hit western North Carolina, Asheville residents were heartbroken as they watched the floodwaters lift up cars, trucks, billboards and homes. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Swannanoa River peaked at 26.1 feet Friday around 4 p.m. That's five feet more than the record set during the 1916 floods, which killed scores of people and destroyed most of Asheville. The Veep debate is a battle of Midwesterners

Democrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance are engaged in one of the most consequential vice presidential debates in US history this week. Voting is already taking place in several states, as early voting began up to 45 days before the election in Virginia, South Dakota and Minneapolis, among others. But the first deadlines for registering new voters are approaching the 30-day countdown to the election. Federal law limits the earliest voter registration deadline to 30 days before the election, which is October 6th. Check your state's requirements.

The MLB playoff race continues

While the six division races, along with the American League wild card field, are all decided, the National League wild card race is still in disarray. The San Diego Padres clinched the first wild-card spot and home-field advantage in the wild-card round with their 5-3 win Friday night over the Arizona Diamondbacks, leaving three teams vying for the final two spots. The New York Mets (87-71), Atlanta (87-71) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (88-72) are tied with two games left after 184 days of the regular season. Read more
