A car's collision with a roadworks site led to the evacuation of 300 residents due to a gas leak – South London News

Two fire engines and three rescue units were called to a gas leak on Mitcham Road in Croydon in the early hours of Sunday.

A 6-inch gas pipe burst after a traffic accident in which a car collided with a road construction site.

Around 300 people were evacuated from surrounding properties by the fire service and the Met and the residents were relocated to a nearby rest center.

A 100m barrier was erected and the road remained closed until midday on Sunday. No injuries were reported.

Station commander Tamer Ozdemir, who was at the scene, said: “Crews worked closely with emergency service partners to carry out the evacuation of the local area.

“Multi-agency service partners remained on scene throughout the night and into Sunday morning to ensure safety at the scene and provide community support.

“Motorists have been advised to avoid the area during the road closures.”

The brigade was called at around 1.15am and the incident ended shortly after 5pm. Around 22 firefighters from Croydon, Lewisham and Euston fire stations attended the scene.
