Murder suspect arrested at SUNY Broome

SUNY Broome student Dawensley Astrel, 21, was arrested on Sept. 16 on murder charges in Georgia.

A SUNY Broome student was arrested in the town of Dickinson on September 16 after the Broome County Sheriff's Department was notified of an active arrest warrant for out-of-state murder.

The student was identified as Dawensley Astrel, 21, of Binghamton. A week before his arrest, SUNY Broome was informed of the arrest warrant issued for him in Georgia. Once informed of the matter, Broome Campus Safety and the sheriff's office agreed to take Astrel into custody without disrupting campus operations or posing a danger to students or staff, according to a SUNY Broome news release.

“University operations were not affected and there was never any danger to students or employees, which is always our top priority,” the press release continued. “We appreciate our close collaboration with our partners and neighbors at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and are grateful that this matter was resolved quickly and peacefully.”

Astrel was enrolled part-time at SUNY Broome and lived off campus.

“Another outstanding piece of police work by our warrant department to bring this wanted individual to justice,” Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar said. “Thank you to SUNY Broome’s campus safety team for their partnership in safely removing this fugitive from their campus.”

Astrel is extradited to Georgia.
