WBA announces who Gervonta Davis will fight next

Fans finally know who Gervonta Davis will face in his next WBA lightweight title defense after the sanctioning body officially announced his next opponent.

Davis was last in action in June and retained his title with a seventh-round stoppage victory over previously unbeaten Frank Martin in Las Vegas.

Attention then immediately turned to who “Tank” would face next, with speculation that a showdown against Shakur Stevenson could eventually occur.

However, a clash with Stevenson did not occur, and instead the WBA announced that Davis would face Lamont Roach, with the fight scheduled for later this year.

“The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championship Committee has granted super featherweight world champion Lamont Roach Jr. special permission to move up in class to face Gervonta Davis for the lightweight championship on December 14.”

NoXcuse Boxing Promotions sent the formal request on September 13th, which was received by the committee for review and consultation with Albert Batyrgaziev's team, the mandatory weight of 130 pounds. Challenger.

After the relevant analysis and based on the organization's internal rules, it was decided to grant Roach's request under certain conditions.

If Roach beats Davis in the fight, he will have five days to submit his decision to the WBA on which of the two titles he will retain and defend. On the other hand, if he loses the fight, he would have to fight the official 130-pound challenger within 120 days of the Davis fight.”

Roach has a record of 25 wins, one loss and one draw and won the WBA super featherweight title with a split decision win over Hector Luis Garcia in November 2023.

If “Tank” wins against Roach, fans hope that a clash with Stevenson could take place in 2025.
