The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D box just leaked, new gaming CPU could have a high clock speed

The packaging for the new AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has just leaked, and if it's real, it shows that both AMD and Intel are putting on their gothic outfits for the launch of the next generation of gaming CPUs. The new 9800X3D is expected to launch soon and will pick up where the acclaimed Ryzen 7 7800X3D left off, possibly with a higher clock speed.

The latter is currently the best gaming CPU you can buy thanks to its use of AMD 3D V-Cache, which in our experience can significantly boost frame rates in games. However, due to the reported stock shortage of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, a replacement is already urgently needed.

This latest rumor comes from tech YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead, who claims that he has leaked packaging and marketing materials for the new CPU. While Moore's Law is Dead isn't always the most accurate source for tech leaks, the marketing shown in the video below is definitely in the usual AMD style of text and images, and the box art looks good too.

If this is true, it shows that AMD is pursuing a similar strategy with the Intel Arrow Lake box graphics, with black playing a prominent role in the color scheme, as it does with the boxes for its other Zen 5 CPUs. The latest Ryzen 7000 Black is, er, the new black, you might say.

Moore's Law is Dead also makes several other claims about the marketing materials for the new CPU. One of them is that there is always evidence that it has 104 MB of cache. However, this is not surprising, because if you add the L2 cache (8 x 1 MB), the L3 cache (32 MB) and the 3D V-cache (64 MB), you get the same total of 104 MB on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

The leaked image also describes the 9800X3D as the “ultimate processor for elite gaming,” and according to Moore's Law is Dead, there is also evidence that it is “designed for higher frequencies.” Could this mean that the 9800X3D has a high clock speed, unlike the 7800X3D which only accelerates to 5GHz?

I hope so. The low clock speed is the 7800X3D's only downside, and it always seemed odd that this well-optimized gaming CPU, which doesn't have the inter-core cache latency issues of the Ryzen 9 7900X3D and 7950X3D, only has a comparatively weak clock speed. Increasing the frequency to a boost clock of 5.7GHz could make it significantly faster than the 7800X3D, especially in games.

However, keep in mind that none of this has been officially confirmed by AMD and that Moore's Law is Dead doesn't have the best reputation for accuracy, especially after the YouTuber posted a supposed AMD Zen 5 slide that was later revealed to be a fake by X user (formerly Twitter) Bionic Squash.

While you wait for AMD's next eight-core X3D gaming CPU to be released, you can also catch up on the news about the AMD Ryzen 5 9600X3D, a six-core gaming CPU that's rumored to be coming soon should.
