2024 MLB Playoffs picture: Baseball rankings, round with Braves, Mets prepare for crucial doubleheader on Monday

While most MLB teams played Game 162 of the regular season on Sunday, the regular season isn't quite over yet. Sunday was supposed to be the final day of action of the 2024 regular season, but a playoff race is still undecided — and it needs an extra day to sort things out. Ten teams have secured spots in the 12-team playoff field. There are two spots left in the NL wild card race, and three teams – the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks – are trying to secure them. The race won't be decided until Monday afternoon's doubleheader in Atlanta between the Braves and Mets. The 2024 MLB postseason begins Tuesday (Here is the full schedule).

The Braves and Mets meet again in Georgia after the final two games of their crucial series were rained out by Hurricane Helene last week. The two NL East rivals enter Monday in playoff position. The Braves, Mets and D-Backs are tied for the last two spots. However, the Braves hold the tiebreaker against both teams and currently own the No. 5 seed. The Mets hold the tiebreaker against the D-Backs and are currently in possession of the No. 6 seed after Sunday's win.

The wildcard races in the Netherlands provided most of the drama on Sunday. Eight of the winning teams were tied to their seeds. The Yankees are the No. 1 seed in the American League, while the Dodgers have claimed the top seed and home-field advantage in the National League throughout the postseason. The Guardians and Phillies both have first-round byes. The Astros and Brewers both won their divisions and will host the Wild Card Series this week as No. 3 seeds. The Orioles and Padres have secured the No. 4 seed in the AL and NL, respectively.

The only other seed that changed hands Sunday was the AL's No. 5 seed. The Royals defeated the Braves and the Tigers fell to the White Sox, sending Kansas City to 5th place in the American League.

As a reminder, MLB now awards 12 playoff spots – a total of six to the division winners and then three wild card spots in each league. The top two division winners in each league based on overall record are awarded first-round byes, meaning they do not have to play in the best-of-three wild-card series, which serves as the first round.
