Man arrested after break-in on Wells Avenue, filmed

A man is behind bars in connection with a break-in at a Wells Avenue store Sunday night.

According to authorities, officers with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) were flagged down by a man on September 29 around 7:40 p.m.

The person lives above a business in the 400 block of Wells Avenue and told officers he was awakened by the sound of breaking glass. As he looked out the window, he saw a person breaking the glass of the business. The resident pulled out his cell phone and recorded a video of the suspect breaking the glass with a chain.

After putting on his shoes, the resident went downstairs to see the suspect walking.

The resident encountered officers on patrol in the area of East 4th Street. He shared his video with them and reported. The images were then shared with other deputies in the area.

Less than an hour after officers were initially stopped, the suspect was located outside Diamonds Casino. According to authorities, he was still in possession of the necklace believed to have been used in the crime.

The suspect was then questioned and arrested.

The suspect was charged with criminal damage (destruction or injury to another person's property, $5,000 or more) and making false statements to obstruct. He is currently being held at the Washoe County Detention Center.

The suspect's name has not been released.

WCSO officials say his arrest was due to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office assisting presence in the East 4th Street corridor. The two-pronged initiative utilizes outreach services through our HOPE team, collaboration with counselors and case managers, and increased community patrol efforts to reduce crime.
