Mets news: Mets recall Joey Lucchesi, option Alex Young

After clinching a playoff spot with a win in the first of two games played today at Truist Park, the Mets decided to sit Luis Severino to save him for the Wild Card Series. In his place, the Mets recalled Joey Lucchesi to start. In a corresponding move, the Mets selected left-handed relief pitcher Alex Young.

Lucchesi had one poor start for the Mets in May but made 27 starts for Triple-A Syracuse this season. His stuff clearly isn't where he or the Mets would like it, but he's saving the Mets' frontline starters for playoff appearances and hopefully giving most of the key members of the bullpen a day off as well.

Young played 14 games for the Mets and was a nice addition to the Mets bullpen with an ERA+ of 123.

With the Braves cutting Chris Sale and going for a bullpen game, this seems like a winnable game and it would be a great end to Lucchesi's season if he could pitch a good game (162).

Send the Braves home, Mr. Churve.
