Chemical fire in Rockdale County: GDOT reopens I-20 in both directions – WSB-TV Channel 2

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. – Rockdale County continues to feel the effects of a chemical fire at a Biolab facility that broke out Sunday morning.

About 17,000 people were evacuated from their homes. The district announced Monday morning that it was extending the shelter-in-place order until further notice.

Officials also said they expected Interstate 20 eastbound and westbound to remain closed from Turner Hill Road to Almon Road. The closures were based “on the unpredictable trajectory and wind direction” of the chemicals in the air.

Just before 7 a.m., the Georgia Department of Transportation reopened I-20 on both sides.

“As of 6:52 a.m., we received the green light from GDOT, in coordination with the Environmental Protection Agency, to open the highway in both the eastbound and westbound directions. All other road closures remain in effect,” the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Monday.
