Three high-profile incidents of road violence involving teenagers in the last three years

There have been three high-profile traffic incidents involving juveniles in Houston in the last three years. The most recent incident involved 19-year-old Cody Johnson.

The search continues for the person responsible for Friday's fatal shooting of 19-year-old Cody Johnson. Initial reports suggest that the incident may have been a result of road unrest. It's a tragic event that Paul Castro knows all too well.

“Most people who carry out shootings like this on the streets know they can get away,” said Paul Castro, a public safety advocate.

Tragically, his son lost his life in 2021 due to an aggressive driver. His family was leaving an Astros game when the driver became angry because he wasn't fired.

“I tried to escape. He pursued us for about three miles. He shot at my truck twice and one of those shots hit my 17-year-old son David, who died,” Castro said.

In another road rage incident in December, Louise Wilson also died due to road rage. She was on her way from Waco to Galveston when she accidentally cut off another driver. The driver then shot her before driving off.

Castro reached out to Johnson's family and offered them help and support navigating the court system.

“I'm trying to prevent other parents from having a similar outcome to ours, which is just two nightmarish years of waiting for justice for my son,” Castro said.

In January, the Houston Police Department launched its Safe Streets Initiative. A plan to combat aggressive driving and road rage. Since the initiative began, HPD has reported 4,070 traffic stops, 5,016 citations, eight drunk driving arrests and four reckless driving arrests. Law enforcement said it is a multi-agency task force working together to promote safe driving practices.

“Don’t get involved with the other driver. If you see the driver getting upset and starting to make hand gestures and things like that, please do not get involved,” said Deputy Laura Magallanes with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
