The Google Pixel 9a just leaked. Here's a look at the new design

Google only released the Pixel 9 series in August, but that doesn't mean the Pixel 9 series is ready. A report from Android Headlines and OnLeaks shows us some high-resolution renders of what the Pixel 9a will look like. The launch is expected to take place in 2025, around the time of Google I/O. in the spring

However, unlike previous A-series Pixel devices, the Pixel 9a doesn't follow the design of the main Pixel 9 series. This year, Google significantly redesigned the Pixel 9 series' camera bar, turning it into a pill-shaped camera island instead of extending into the phone's frame.

However, the Pixel 9a appears to have a redesigned camera bar againwhich makes it very different from the Pixel 9. Instead of a protruding camera island module, the Pixel 9a appears to feature a dual camera system that sits flush with the rest of the back of the phone. There may be a small ring sticking out around the module, but it's not as noticeable as the camera bar that Pixels are known for.

While that is the most significant change you would notice, there are other things that stand out. For one thing, the Pixel 9a appears to have a dual-camera setup with what is presumably a primary camera and an ultra-wide-angle lens, so there's likely no telephoto sensor. The display is also surrounded by some large bezels, but that's not too surprising for a phone in this price range (probably under $500).

While I've come to love the iconic look of the Pixel devices' camera bar, I think it's interesting to use a module that sits more flush with the back. In fact, I miss the old days of smartphones with simpler cameras where the phone didn't shake when you used it on a flat surface. So if the representations are correct, we thank Google for this approach.

Additionally, unlike the rest of the regular Pixel 9 series, the Pixel 9a will launch with Android 15. Again, Android 15 hasn't officially launched yet – it's still in beta – but the rollout is expected to begin sometime in October. That's why it would only make sense for the Pixel 9a to launch with Android 15. It will also receive seven years of updates and support under Google's warranty.

Finally, the Pixel 9a could be the last Pixel to use a Samsung-made processor. The Pixel 10, which will be released next fall, is said to have a fully customized version Google chip from TSMC.

Other specs for the Pixel 9a should be similar that of the Pixel 8a that we got a few months ago. This includes a 6.1-inch display, 8GB of RAM (if not more) and at least 128GB of storage. Like the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup, it will feature a Tensor G4and the battery life could be slightly improved compared to its predecessor.

For reference, the Pixel 8a was announced on May 7, 2024, a week before Google I/O 2024. Although we don't have confirmation of the dates yet, we expect the Pixel 9a to launch around a similar time frame will come.
