Fueled by Goff’s perfect throwing night, Lions defeat Seahawks 42-29

With less than two minutes left, Smith works to get this Seattle offense down the field quickly as he finds Metcalf for 21 yards before the receiver runs out of bounds, then Smith scrambles away for 11 yards and another quick first down. After an incomplete pass from Smith on first down, Smith has to throw it away short to Bobo but the rookie Arnold is flagged yet again for pass interference, giving Seattle another first down. With a fresh set of downs, Smith tries to find Lockett down the middle but it’s incomplete, but there’s another flag on the field as Onwuzurike is called for roughing the pass. Both players are down after the play, Smith comes back but Onwuzurike has to leave the game. Smith wants Smith-Njigba in the end zone but he throws into triple coverage and the pass is intercepted by Joseph for his third of the season in four games. And with two kneel downs from a perfect Goff, Detroit finally breaks the losing streak to Seattle and takes home another primetime victory. (End of game)

Lions defense makes huge stop, but offense gets too aggressive and Seattle gets a safety

Lions have the ball back, but its deep in their own side of the field. First-and-10 at their own four and the Lions give it to Montgomery for no gain as Seattle uses their second timeout. Goff drops back to throw and is sacked but somehow gets out of the end zone for a 3-yard loss as we reach the two-minute warning. After the warning, the ruling on the field has been changed to a safety after Goff couldn’t fully get out of bounds. Instead, it’s just over a second before the two-minute warning as the Lions kick it away to Seattle. Williams catches the kickoff and takes it down the sideline to get inside Lions territory, but Seattle’s Dareke Young is called for holding and the Seahawks start from their own 20. (1:54)

Seattle has plenty of time to get a quick score for a comeback attempt, but it doesn’t start well as Smith is sacked by Levi Onwuzurike for a 2-yard loss. Smith passes it to Walker for a 13-yard gain, then Smith connects with Lockett for another 13-yard and another first down. Smith-Njigba can’t catch the pass in tight coverage, but Fant makes a big leaping catch over Joseph for a first down. Smith-Njigba catches a short pass but is quickly taken down by Robertson. James Houston is called for encroachment which gives Seattle five yards, but the Lions avoid a pass interference call on Metcalf in the end zone. Smith throws it short to Bobo who gains nine yards before getting ran out of bounds. Now it’s first-and-18 at the Detroit 18. Smith scrambles out of bounds for seven yards, but Arnold is called for yet another holding flag which adds five yards and makes it first-and-goal. Now at the Detroit 3, Smith’s pass is deflected at the line, then on second down he throws it right to Anzalone but the linebacker can’t catch it. On third down, Smith wants Metcalf in the end zone but the receiver has to deflect the ball away from Davis to stop the interception. Now it’s fourth-and-goal with the play clock winding down, as Smith somehow catches the snap while not even looking and he goes to Lockett in the back of the end zone but it’s incomplete as the Lions make a big defensive stop. Goff stays perfect, this time throws touchdown to St. Brown as Lions extend lead yet again

Lions start on their own 20 now and decide to throw it on first down, with Goff throwing a perfect ball to Patrick for a 29-yard completion. Now at their own 49, Gibbs goes up the middle for three yards on first down, and they go back to him as he explodes off the line and has to be dragged down on an 8-yard run and a first down. The next play is a tight-end screen to LaPorta, who follows his blockers for 30 yards and another first-and-goal opportunity for Detroit. Goff tries to connect with LaPorta in the end zone but misses him, and Wright is called for offensive pass interference to nullify the incompletion but it’s now first-and-goal at the Seattle 20. They go on the ground with a toss to Gibbs, who runs out of bounds after getting eight yards back. Gibbs gets another carry down the middle for four yards and Seattle uses their first timeout of the second half with 5:29 left. After the timeout, Goff floats it to St. Brown who gets all ten toes in near the side of the end zone for the touchdown. Goff stays a perfect 18-for-18 tonight and the Lions get back to scoring. Seattle has gone 3-for-3 on offense in this second half, and they can tie it if they can get in the end zone again. Smith throws it short to Charbonnet for a 3-yard gain on first down, then he finds Barner who gets a good block from Bono before hurdling ahead for 18 yards and a first down. Charbonnet gets a carry down the middle for 12 yards and another first down, then Smith finds Smith-Njigba for an 8-yard gain. Now it’s second-and-2 and the Seahawks toss it to Charbonnet again as he gets a first down, but Metcalf is called for holding to make it second-and-9. Smith yet again finds Charbonnet in the flats to make it third-and-3 for Seattle. Smith wants Lockett on the quick slant, but Robertson makes a clean deflection on the ball to make it fourth down. Seattle smartly goes for it and Smith-Njigba is wide open for a first down, but there’s a flag on Lockett for offensive pass interference for 10 yards. Now it’s fourth-and-13 and the Seahawks are forced to punt it away for the first time this half. Another flag for a false start on Seattle adds five more yards, and the punt still falls out of bounds. (8:57)

Lions scored on both of their possession in the third quarter, let’s see what they do in the fourth. Starting at their own 30, Gibbs gets the carry for seven yards. Lions keep it on the ground as Gibbs runs for two more yards to make it third-and-short. This time Montgomery gets the carry on the outside, but the Seahawks defense sniffs it out and this Lions offense is finally stopped. Fox punts it away after a quick three-and-out and Seattle will start at their own 21. (12:49)

Walker dominates in pass and run game, former Spartan scores third touchdown of the night

(Start of 4th Quarter) It’s first-and-10 for the Seahawks at the Detroit 21, as Smith throws an incomplete pass to Walker. They give it to Walker on a second down run, as he bounces to the other side of field and outruns the Lions defense for a 21-yard touchdown run. Seahawks go for the extra point and make it to keep it an eight point deficit. (14:48)

With four total touchdowns scored, Lions and Seahawks go back-and-forth as Lions hold onto two-possession lead

Seahawks have scored on both of their third quarter possession, now it’s time for the Lions defense to make a stand. With Hutchinson in his face, Smith passes it to Walker who gains seven yards on the screen pass. Then Smith finds Lockett for five yards and a first down. Walker takes another short pass and evades multiple Lions defenders for a big 23-yard gain and another first down. Davis was injured on the play but is able to walk off. Smith tries to evade the defense on first down but just gets tackled down by DJ Reader for a 4-yard loss and Reader’s first sack as a Lion. The last play of the third quarter is another screen to Laviska Shenault down the middle for 18 yards as we have reached the end of a high-scoring third quarter. (End of 3rd Quarter)

Lions answer back, Goff finds Williams for 70-yard touchdown as Lions extend lead yet again

Lions start on their own 30 in a high-scoring third quarter. Goff goes play-action on first down again and finds Williams wide open on a crossing route, as he speeds away with nothing but green grass and St. Brown ahead of him for a one-play, 70-yard touchdown. Williams is flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after dunking the ball into the goalpost, but it seems like a tribute to Calvin Johnson so we’ll allow it. Bates still hits the extra point and that two-point attempt from Seattle may cost them. (2:52)

Seattle keeps up high-scoring third quarter, answer back with touchdown but can’t convert two-point attempt

We get a rare kickoff that actually lands in the back of the end zone, so Seattle will start at their own 20. We also get another rarity, a big run for Walker as he bounces outside for 28 yards on first down. Now at their own 48, Smith runs it up the middle for two yards, then he has Hutchinson in his face on second down as has to throw it away. Now it’s third-and-8 as Joseph almost has Smith for the sack, but Smith just escapes and finds Smith-Njigba for 11 yards and a first down. Walker somehow loses six whole yards on first down to make it second-and-long, but Smith makes another big play as he finds Lockett down the middle and the receiver runs for 29 yards into the red zone. Smith has to throw it away on first down, but Arnold is flagged for holding to make it first down at the Detroit 11. On first down, Smith finds Bobo as he falls for a first down and is one yard away from a touchdown, which leads to the handoff to Walker for the touchdown. Seattle goes for two, as Metcalf can’t catch the ball inbounds in the end zone but Davis is flagged again for pass interference, and this time it’s not as obvious. On their second try, Davis gets the stop on Bobo to force the incompletion and now the Lions are up by eight. (3:03)

Goff and St. Brown switch places, Goff catches touchdown pass as Lions answer back

Now it’s the Lions who look to answer with a big drive after coming up empty on their last possession of the first half. They start off strong at their own 30, with Goff finding Montgomery for a big 40-yard reception that basically flips the field for Detroit. Now at Seattle’s 30, Montgomery can’t find any room on a first down run, but Goff gets time and finds Tim Patrick as he is ran out of bounds for 23 yards and yet another first-and-goal opportunity. Montgomery tries to run outside on first down but he can’t find any room and has to run out of bounds for no gain. Now on second down Goff flips it to St. Brown who passes it to… Goff?? For the touchdown??? Yep, Goff outran a Seattle lineman and catches a perfect ball from St. Brown for a 7-yard reception touchdown. Bates makes the extra point after the highlight of the night so far. (6:57)

Thanks to pass interference call, Seahawks answer back on opening third quarter drive and score touchdown

(Start of 3rd Quarter) We’re back from halftime. Lions won the toss but started the game with the ball, meaning Seattle will start the second half with possession. Dee Williams takes the kickoff from the end zone and returns it to their own 25. This time, the Seahawks give it to Walker on first down for six yards, then he gets a second down carry for a loss as Joseph makes the tackle behind the line of scrimmage. It’s third-and-5 as Smith finds Smith-Njigba on the throw, but the receiver is downed a yard short to make it fourth down. Seattle will go for it and Smith gets the first down on the QB sneak. Walker gets another first down carry for two yards, then Smith throws a dangerous pass to Metcalf that’s almost intercepted by Davis to make it third-and-8. Lions send five rushers at Smith, but he gets enough time to find Metcalf for 10 yards and the first down. Seahawks go back to throwing the ball as Walker takes the short pass down the sideline for six yards. Now it’s second down and Smith finds Fant for 16 yards and another first down. Seahawks now at the Lions 30 as Smith tries to deep for Metcalf but Davis is flagged for pass interference. Davis is fuming after the flag but it’s the correct call and the flag makes it first-and-goal at the Detroit 9, with Smith going play-action to rookie and former Wolverine AJ Barner for the touchdown. Seahawks cut it to a touchdown yet again after the extra point is made on an impressive drive. (9:46)

Lions keep Seahawks at bay, take 21-7 lead into halftime

Not a lot of time left and the Seahawks have no timeouts left as Smith throws an incomplete pass down the middle on first down, then Detroit uses a timeout on an injured Hutchinson who leaves the field. Lions only have 10 men on the field as Smith runs for 12 yards and a first down. With five seconds left, Lions play way back on coverage and allow Metcalf to catch a 5-yarder and run out of bounds. Jason Myers comes out with two seconds left to attempt a 62-yard field goal, which is short and allows Khalil Dorsey to attempt a return off the short kick. He’s tackled and the Seahawks are flagged for a facemask call, as the Lions decline the penalty to send us to halftime where former receiver Calvin Johnson will be inducted into the Pride of the Lions. (End of 1st Half)

With just over a minute left, Lions look to add more points to their lead. On first down, Goff throws it short to Gibbs with a lot of time in the pocket, and it’s because there are two flags on both tackles for holding but the Seahawks decide to accept the one on Sewell. On first-and-17 now, Goff throws the screen pass to Raymond who gains nine yards to make it second-and-8, as Goff is then sacked by Derick Hall as the linebacker had Goff by the collar but there’s no flag as he was sacked in the pocket. After the Seahawks use their second timeout, Lions run a draw for Gibbs for five yards to make Seattle burn their final timeout and help make the punt easier for Fox, pinning the Seahawks at their own 39. (14 seconds left)

Bates kicks it for a touchback as Seattle looks to answer back yet again. It’s another short first down pass with Zach Charbonnet catching it for just four yards. Then Smith finds Lockett again for eight yards and the first down, but on first-and-10 its Rodriguez who comes off the edge to get his first sack of the year on Smith. The Seahawks can’t get the play off and use their first timeout before the play clock expires. After the timeout, Smith has to throw it away on second down to make it third-and-16. Smith passes it short to Smith-Njigba who laterals it to a wide open Charbonnet, as the running back runs down the sideline for 16 yards and just gets the first down. Charbonnet takes another reception short, as he stiff-arms Arnold but only gains two yards on the last play before the two-minute warning. After the warning, Smith goes deep down the seams to Noah Fant but Campbell makes the tip for the incompletion as Brown is flagged for holding Aidan Hutchinson. Now it’s second-and-18 as Charbonnet runs right before being tackled out of bounds by Jalen Reeves-Maybin. That catch makes it third-and-10 as Smith goes down the sideline to Metcalf but Davis forces another incompletion as the Seahawks punt it again with Raymond returning it to the Detroit 15. (1:01)

Thanks to penalties, Lions punch it in with Gibbs to lead 21-7 in second quarter

Lions look to score on their third straight offensive drive. This time they’ll start at their own 30 after the touchback, with Goff finding St. Brown down the middle for eight yards. On second down, Goff finds LaPorta after scrambling away and the tight end gets more than enough for the first down, and we’ll add 15 more yards after Trevis Gipson is flagged for a facemask. Now it’s first-and-10 at the Seattle 38 as Gibbs runs up the middle for just two yards, but gets another carry for second down who gains 10 and gets the first down. Goff throws a first down screen pass to St. Brown who is taken down for a gain of three, then Gibbs takes another run down the middle for four yards. It’s now third-and-3, and Goff finds LaPorta again down the sideline for a big 13-yard reception and makes it first-and-goal at the Seattle 6. Goff throws it short to St. Brown again for five yards, then it’s the Seahawks this time who are flagged for too many men on the field, allowing Gibbs to run it in for his second rushing touchdown of the night. The extra point is good and the Lions lead by 14 points yet again. (5:11)

Metcalf’s big reception creates touchdown run for Seahawks, Seattle answers back

After another touchback, Seattle will start from their own 30 again and will look to regain some momentum. This time, the Seahawks start with a run as Josh Paschal drags Walker down for a 3-yard gain. On second down, Smith’s pass to Pharoah Brown misses the mark for an incompletion to make it third-and-7, as Smith scrambles out the pocket and finds Smith-Njigba again for a first down. Seahawks throw it again, and Davis forces the incomplete pass to Metcalf on great coverage. Brown gets another reception on second down, as Anzalone and Paschal combine to stop him and make it another third-and-7. Ford Field gets loud as the Lions defensive line forces Smith to scramble for a yard, but Davis is flagged for holding on Metcalf and gives the Seahawks a first down. Seattle’s first play in Lions territory is another completion to Lockett for six yards, then on second down Smith throws it quickly to Walker who stays upright and gets a first down, but there’s also a flag for offsides on the defense that is declined. After Walker gains two yards on first down, Smith finds Metcalf open in single coverage as the receiver gets downed at the 1-yard line thanks to a tackle from Kerby Joseph. Now it’s first-and-goal and Walker gains nothing down the middle, but the Lions are flagged for 12 men on the field, as Walker this time bounces it outside for the easy walk-in touchdown. Seahawks makes the extra point and make this a one-touchdown game. (10:08)

Gibbs runs it in this time, Lions take two possession lead just seconds into second quarter

(Start of 2nd Quarter) It’s first-and-goal at the Seattle 3, and this time it’s Gibbs who punches in the touchdown as the Lions seem fully in control. Bates sneaks in another extra point as Detroit now takes an early two-touchdown lead. (14:58)

Montgomery scores, then Campbell forces fumble as Lions threaten to score again after one quarter

Lions get another quick red zone opportunity. Gibbs takes a first down run for just one yard gained, then Goff finds Wright again who fights for 10 yards to make it first-and-goal as that is the final play of this quarter. (End of 1st Quarter)

Seahawks start from their own 30 after the touchback on the kickoff. Smith throws another short pass, this time to Jaxon Smith-Njigba for just two yards on first down, then Smith wants Tyler Lockett on second down but it’s Terrion Arnold with the tight coverage to force the incompletion with no flag. On third-and-8, Smith connects again with Smith-Njigba near the sideline as he just sneaks pass Amik Robertson to get the first down. Seattle keeps the ball in the air on first down, as Smith connects with Jake Bobo down the middle for 11 yards. Smith and Metcalf connect on a impressive low grab from the receiver, but there are offsetting penalties from both teams that negate the play. Metcalf gets another catch and fights multiple Lions defenders for extra yards, but Jack Campbell punches the ball out and Carlton Davis picks it up, running down the sideline before Walker tackles him out of bounds at the Seattle 14. Lions offense rolls, Montgomery finishes 93-yard drive with touchdown

Lions run it on first-and-10 as Montgomery jukes his way to an 11-yard gain and a first down. On the next play, it’s another Montgomery handoff for four yards. It’s second-and-6 and Goff makes a big step-up in the pocket to find Jameson Williams for 10 yards and another first down. Lions go back to the air on the next play as Amon-Ra St. Brown gets his first reception for four yards, then on the next play Goff audibles to play-action and throws another laser to St. Brown for 17 yards to move the chains. Lions are in Seahawks territory for the first time tonight and Montgomery finds another big hole down the middle for a 7-yard gain. It’s another handoff to Montgomery on second down, who bounces outside for 13 yards and yet another first down. Lions go play-action yet again on first down as Goff goes short to Brock Wright for three yards. The offense has been churning all throughout this drive, and it keeps going as Jahmyr Gibbs takes his first carry down the middle for 20 yards and now the Lions make it first-and-goal at the Seahawks 4. Montgomery can’t find any room and gets just a yard on the first down run, and goes up the gut again for two yards on second down. It’s a critical third-and-goal with one yard to go, with Dan Skipper reporting as eligible, and Montgomery reaches for the endzone and gets the touchdown. Jake Bates just sneaks the extra point in as the Lions complete a 93-yard drive and take the lead. (3:11)

Here’s the first possession for this high-powered Seattle offense starting at their own 23. Geno Smith goes to DK Metcalf for a big catch near the sideline for a 20-yard gain on their first play. Smith wants Metcalf again on the next play but the ball is out of reach, then on second down former Spartan Kenneth Walker III gets met by Jack Campbell and Alex Anzalone for a loss of two. Now it’s third-and-12 and Smith completes his second pass short to Metcalf, who gets tackled down by Malcolm Rodriguez. Seahawks punt on fourth-and-4 and Raymond fair catches it at the Lions 7 as we hit our first TV timeout. (10:32)

(Start of 1st Quarter) Jared Goff and the Lions go play action on first-and-10 and its a quick pass to Sam LaPorta for a yard as Devon Witherspoon makes the tackle. It’s a second down run for three yards by David Montgomery to make it third-and-6, as Goff can’t find anyone open and takes a sack for a 14-yard loss. Jack Fox will punt it to the Seahawks as Dee Williams returns it, but the Seahawks are called for holding as they’ll start deeper in their own territory. (12:43)

Here we go, nothing like Monday Night Football in the Motor City! The Lions are debuting their new all-black uniforms with those sleek blue helmets, while the Seahawks contrast with an all-white uniform. The Lions win the toss and decide to start the game with the ball. Kalif Raymond takes the kickoff back to the Detroit 27.

The Lions find themselves hosting another primetime game, facing the Seattle Seahawks in a Monday night doubleheader.

The Lions won their lone “Monday Night Football” game last season. The same can’t be said for their record against the Seahawks, as they’ve lost six straight against Seattle and in each of the past three seasons under coach Dan Campbell.

It won’t be an easy task to defeat the 3-0 Seahawks, as the Lions will be without one of their core pieces on the offensive line in Frank Ragnow, who is out with a pectoral injury. The All-Pro center is known to play through injuries, as he did during the 20-13 win against the Cardinals last week, but the team won’t risk further injury in its last game before a bye week.

It’s also another week with a matchup against a talented wide receiver group. The Lions need to figure out how to stop quarterback Geno Smith, who is 2-0 against Detroit since becoming Seattle’s starter in the 2022 season. He has a combined 648 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions while completing 77% of his passes in those two games.
