Dawn Watson, 14, was crossing Haverford Avenue at 66th Street with her mother around 9:35 p.m. on Sept. 26, 2024, when a car struck the girl, Philadelphia police said.

The driver – of what appeared to be a dark Mercedes-Benz sedan – was speeding east on Haverford Avenue and did not stop after hitting the 14-year-old, Philadelphia Police Inspector Michael Gormley said.

“The limo pushed the girl off her mother,” Gormley said. “And unfortunately she succumbed to her injuries.”

The girl was thrown far away, Gormley said. Investigators later determined that the car was traveling at high speed.

Officials said the scene spanned an entire city block.

“The mother was obviously distraught,” Gormley said. “The daughter was thrown far away and the mother had a hard time finding her daughter. “We found the hysterical mother a few blocks away.”

The police initially did not provide any further information about the suspected hit-and-run driver.

On Friday, the Philadelphia School District said Dawn was an eighth-grader at Lewis C. Cassidy School, just a block from where she was killed.

A small memorial was erected near the intersection where she was struck and killed.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing and police said more information will be provided as information becomes available.
