BTS Suga drunk driving incident explained: sorry, fine, more

Suga of BTS has come under fire in recent months for a drunk driving incident. Read on to find out everything we know:

Min Yoongi, known professionally as Suga, announced in a statement that his driver's license was revoked and fined following an incident on Tuesday, August 6, in which he rode his scooter home drunk.

The transportation official for Yongsan District, where Suga lives, reported that the artist was discovered alone on the ground and given a breath test at the train station. His blood alcohol content was confirmed to be 0.08 percent or more over the license suspension limit.

Suga admitted that he was unaware of the law that prohibits the use of electric scooters while under the influence of alcohol. He noted that he fell while trying to park the scooter at his apartment, where he was subsequently found by a police officer and tested for alcohol.

According to a user on I apologize to those who were hurt by my negligence and wrong actions, and from now on I will be more and more careful with my actions so that something like this will not happen.”

Big Hit Music, Suga's label, said he drove about 500 meters on the scooter while drunk and was later escorted home by police. The company noted that he was wearing a helmet during the incident.

The label condemned Suga's “inappropriate behavior” and mentioned that he faces disciplinary action.

On September 30, a Seoul court fined BTS band member Suga 15 million KRW (US$11,500) for driving an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol. Suga can challenge the ruling by requesting a full trial within seven days of the court's decision.

Due to the star's popularity, the DUI has attracted extensive media coverage, some of which appeared to be based on leaked police information and other parts based on speculation.

This entire situation comes amid Suga's service as a social worker, a position he has held since September 2023 due to shoulder surgery in 2020. His extended military service, which lasts 21 months, is scheduled to end in May 2025.
