Dallas Cowboys Checkered Hat: What's the Story Behind It?

DALLAS – The Dallas Cowboys played the New York Giants in prime time Thursday night, and along with the action on the field, fans probably noticed a new fashion item on the sideline. Specifically, on Mike McCarthy's head.

The Cowboys coach debuted a multi-colored checkered team cap for the first time this season. McCarthy and his staff have previously worn the NFL team's rope hats.

The plaid definitely looks unique, but it serves a good cause. The NFL launches a “Crucial Catch” apparel line each season to support cancer research and detection. The plaid hat is actually an overlay of the different ribbon colors in support of each type of cancer.

The Cowboys Crucial Catch hat retails for $38.99 (and is available on the NFL Shop website here). The league does not benefit from Crucial Catch apparel sales. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society through the NFL Foundation.
