THE SHOVEL

The Devils picked up their first preseason win against the Rangers on Monday night at the Prudential Center. New Jersey fielded primarily AHL players. The chemistry that has developed with this core has helped the team play a cohesive game and produce a strong defensive performance. Additionally, Jeremy Brodeur's great goaltending helped the Devils win. Brian Halonen, Nathan Légaré and Kevin Labanc scored goals in the win.

The Rangers had a strong preseason, winning their first three games before falling to the Devils yesterday. Although they played against an AHL-strength squad on Monday night, expect to see more key players for New York at Madison Square Garden. The non-game training group was full of NHL players on Monday.

WHO IS HOT

Devil: Brian Halonen was a huge success with his opening goal on Monday, his physicality throughout the game and his many appearances on the Devils' successful special teams. In addition, he was close to scoring a Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal and a challenge.

Ranger: Adam Erne also came within a stone's throw of a Gordie Howe hat-trick on Monday night as he provided a challenge and an assist in the game.

INJURIES

Devil: Pesce (leg), L. Hughes (shoulder),

Ranger: Vesey (lower body, week to week)
