According to the public prosecutor's office, a Chinese woman was arrested in Germany on suspicion of espionage

A Chinese woman was arrested in the German city of Leipzig on suspicion of being a foreign agent and passing on information about arms shipments, the attorney general said in a statement on Tuesday.

The suspect, identified only as Yaqi

The second Chinese national, named Jian G, was working as an adviser to Maximilian Krah, a member of the European Parliament for the far-right Alternative for Germany, when he was arrested this year on suspicion of “particularly serious” espionage on behalf of Beijing.

The Chinese embassy in Berlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Across Western Europe, fears of alleged Chinese espionage have been rising recently. Beijing has rejected the accusations, saying they are based on a “Cold War mindset” and aimed at poisoning the atmosphere for cooperation between China and Europe.

Tensions between Berlin and Beijing also simmered last year after Chancellor Olaf Scholz unveiled a strategy to de-risk Germany's economic ties with China, calling Beijing a “partner, competitor and systemic rival.”
