October 1: Today in Apple History: Leak in Apple's own code reveals existence of iPhone 4s October 1, 2011: Just days before Apple plans to unveil the iPhone 4s, the device's name is leaked after the latest iTunes beta accidentally revealed the new name.

The code also reveals that Apple's new phone will be available in black and white color options.

The iPhone 4s name has been leaked, but that doesn't hurt sales

The iPhone 4s was the last iPhone released during Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs' lifetime. As the second iPhone “S” model, it followed the iPhone 3GS from 2009. It consolidated Apple's strategy of releasing comprehensive iPhone updates in full quantities every two years. The intervening years brought minor “S” upgrades with an emphasis on improved internals.

Still, the iPhone 4s was a great phone. The last iPhone that Jobs worked on directly. Its features included a faster A5 chip, an improved 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording and – most importantly – Apple's new AI virtual assistant Siri.

Unsurprisingly, the announcement of the name and appearance of the iPhone 4s has not dented the device's popularity. The Siri phone came out at a time when the world was starting to go crazy for iPhones. For the only time in Apple's history, this iPhone debuted while sales of its predecessor continued to rise. The situation was only made worse by Jobs' untimely death at the age of 56, just days before the iPhone 4s came onto the market.
