Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick docuseries may not end up on ESPN after all

Four years ago, ESPN commissioned a documentary series about Colin Kaepernick from Spike Lee. Now, it may not be televised by ESPN after all.

ESPN has no plans to debut Puck's Matt Belloni The saga of Colin Kaepernick for at least another year. If that isn't fast enough for Lee, Kaepernick and producer Jemele Hill, ESPN will allow them to buy it elsewhere.

Belloni explains that the project was delayed by Lee's schedule and “bitter disagreements between Kaepernick.” [and Lee] about the direction of the project.” According to Ourand, Kaepernick and Lee have largely resolved their issues; Apparently Kaepernick wanted the series to focus on his experiences and Lee wanted to “expand the series well beyond Kaepernick.” The final cut will show how they found the balance.

Kaepernick last played in the NFL during the 2016 season. His career ended in a fog of collusion fueled by false narratives to justify his rejection. Only the Seahawks invited him to visit in 2017. The Raiders gave him a workout in 2022.

In 2019, the NFL tried to develop a workout for Kaepernick that all teams would be invited to. A dispute over the wording of the NFL's waiver derailed the practice and prompted Kaepernick to do something of his own. Ultimately (in our opinion) both sides were responsible for what happened five years ago.

A few weeks ago, Kaepernick (who turns 37 in November) said he still wants to play in the NFL. True or false, the window was slammed shut. The biggest question now is when, or if, the curtain will be raised on Lee's documentaries about Kaepernick.
