Officials say an officer was killed in a crash caused by a distracted driver

The deputy was taken to a local hospital in Brownville where he died from his injuries.

CAMERON COUNTY, Texas — A Cameron County deputy was killed Monday after his patrol car was struck by a distracted driver in Brownsville, officials say.

DPS is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on State Highway 48 near Marine Way Road in Brownsville, Cameron County, around 6:45 p.m.

Officials say Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia was in a patrol unit parked on the highway when a driver in a white Chevrolet Silverado struck the patrol unit from behind.

The deputy was taken to a local hospital in Brownville where he died from his injuries.

The man driving the Chevrolet admitted to officers that he was distracted looking at his phone while driving.

Officers suspect the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and will be tested.

DPS troopers are continuing their investigation.
