LA Mayor Karen Bass attends the swearing in of Mexico's first ever female president

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will be in attendance Mexico's elected president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo will be sworn in on Tuesday, making her the first female president in the country's history.

She arrives in Mexico City on Monday evening after meeting with President Joe Biden on Sunday at the White House in Washington, DC, where the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic teams were celebrated.

Sheinbaum, former mayor of Mexico City and climate researcher received more than 33 million votesgood for 59% of the vote. Her opponent, Xóchitl Gálvez, who ran for the Democratic Revolution Party, received almost 28% of all votes cast.

Bass issued a statement congratulating Sheinbaum on her victory in October 2023.

“I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Sheinbaum in Los Angeles where we discussed our shared priorities and the continued strong relationship between Los Angeles and Mexico,” the statement said. “I look forward to the continued partnership between Los Angeles and Mexico as we continue to create safer and more equitable communities for those we serve.”

After the ceremony, Bass is expected to return to LA as early as Wednesday.
