Man is charged with rape and sexual assault following an incident in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A man has been charged with rape and sexual assault following an incident that occurred on or about July 2, 2023.

Following a five-day jury trial, 28-year-old Shawn Quoetone was found guilty on September 30 of all counts charged, including rape, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated criminal sodomy.

Topeka Police Department officers were called to Stormont Vail Hospital regarding an 18-year-old female reporting a rape that occurred in the early morning hours on or about July 2, 2023.

A subsequent investigation revealed to officers that the perpetrator was known to the victim.

They were able to locate the perpetrator, later identified as Shawn Quoetone, and he was taken to the Shawnee County Corrections Department.

Quoetone's sentencing will take place on November 24, 2024 at 1:30 p.m.

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay commends the work of Assistant District Attorney Steve Karrer, Assistant District Attorney Kaylee Stutz and their litigation support team in prosecuting this case.

He also commends the Topeka Police Department for their investigative work and their help in bringing this case to justice. The prosecutor also recognizes the jury and commends them for their service.
