Charges increased against five suspects in Mahogany Jackson murder and kidnapping

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Court records show 20-year-old Mahogany Jackson was kidnapped and brutally murdered, with the suspects participating in and recording the attacks for over 24 hours. Now all eight suspects in this case must answer for murder.

Mahogany Jackson's mother, Gail Shearer, says they deserve this and that she will be there every step of the way to ensure her daughter gets justice.

“You contributed to my child’s disappearance. She's gone and she's never coming back. This is so difficult for me. It’s so hard,” Shearer says.

Eight months later, Shearer is still battling the disease, knowing there is nothing she can do to save her baby.

“I feel sad when I think about how much life she had left in front of her and that is now gone. There’s nothing I can do about it,” Shearer says. “I always said to my children, 'Whatever problem you have, come to me and I will help you.' I can't fix this. There’s nothing I can do to change what happened to my daughter.”

Mahogany reached out and called her family during the abuse. Her family was struggling because they couldn't help her. But Shearer says she is worried about Mahogany's four-year-old daughter, Nadia.

“When I try to tell her, 'You know, your mother is an angel,' she says, 'No.' You told me she was sleeping. “My mother is sleeping,” says Shearer.

But she knows that one day she will have to explain what really happened.

“When I have to play videos of my daughter to my granddaughter so she can see her mother alive. This is heartbreaking. My granddaughter is growing up and will never see her mother again. I will never see my child again. “That’s not right,” explains Shearer.

Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr says it will be a long road to justice.

“We need to set a calendar and dates for negotiations, whether they will be negotiated together or whether they will be negotiated separately. There are also laws that require this,” says Carr.
