Pike Co. school is raising money and honoring a student injured in an accident

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) – Octavia Trivette is a star student whose presence is always known at Millard School. When she was injured and hospitalized after a car accident in North Carolina, prayers and plans poured in from Mustang Mountain.

“She comes and says good morning and then asks where all the kids are,” said teacher Stephanie Bartley. “Now they ask where she is and we just tell him she's sick right now; She’s hurt, she’s in a lot of pain and she’ll be back with us soon.”

Teachers decided to hold a “Hat Day for Octavia” on Tuesday, asking students to pay $1 to violate the dress code and wear a hat in honor of the hospitalized student.

“This is one of our babies. Octavia is one of our babies. We are all one family here at Millard School,” said Principal Jake Robinson. “When our entire staff learned of this, our entire staff immediately joined a prayer circle for Octavia and the entire family and everyone involved in this accident.”

The event was broadcast to East Ridge High School's feeder schools, expanding the reach of the school's mission to raise money to offset the family's unexpected expenses.

“It’s a small sign, but we can do anything,” Robinson said. “We just want to try to give as much support as we can and pray as much as we can.”

Teachers say it's impressive to see so many students and families stepping up to help families in need. T-shirts are also being made to raise money and other activities are underway in the community where people are praying and hoping that she will be healed quickly.

“She is a light in our room and we miss her so much,” Bartley said.

Robinson said the response was no surprise because the school community always comes together.

“The fact that the community is willing to join us just means the absolute world to me,” Robinson said. “That’s what makes this school a special place.”
