A coding error in the election database affects 218,000 Arizona residents

A new group of 120,000 Arizonans could be affected by a failure in coding oversight within the Department of Motor Vehicles.

PHOENIX – The number of voters affected by a coding error within the Department of Motor Vehicles more than doubled Monday after new information emerged from the Arizona Secretary of State.

According to the Arizona Secretary of State, an additional 120,000 Arizona residents may have been affected by the “data coding oversight” in both the MVD and Arizona's voter registration database.

The new data includes about 79,000 Republicans, 61,000 Democrats and 76,000 Other Parties, bringing the total number of affected people to about 218,000.

According to the Arizona Secretary of State, a Sept. 20 Arizona Supreme Court ruling allowing those implicated in the oversight issue to stand and apply to the additional Arizonans identified Monday.

If necessary, election officials will contact those affected after the general election.

It concerns the misclassification of voters with a driver's license issued before 1996. Arizona requires residents to provide proof of citizenship to vote in state and local elections.

Staff and experts from the Secretary of State's Office continue to work with MVD to investigate whether additional voters have been affected.
