According to Vidor ISD, there is no evidence of a gas leak in the middle school building

Vidor – The Vidor School District believes a gas smell that led to the evacuation and eventual cancellation of classes at the middle school came from somewhere outside the building. Classes are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

The district evacuated Vidor Middle School around 9 a.m. Tuesday after staff and students noticed a smell of gas.

As a precaution, administrators contacted Orange County Emergency Services and used a meter reading to determine the gas level in the building.

Using extreme caution, the district evacuated students to the Vidor High School gymnasium and gave parents the opportunity to self-select their students.

The smell was gone by about 12:30 p.m. and all gas valves were checked and found to be closed. All measurements were normal.

“At this point, it is believed that the odor came from outside and made its way inside the building,” said Jay Killgo, VISD superintendent. “We appreciate the efforts of the entire Vidor Middle School staff and others throughout the district who helped. Vidor ISD would also like to commend the staff and students for their understanding and cooperation. As always, we will continue to evaluate our processes and learning from this event and provide our students with the utmost safety.”
