Police: 12 teenagers arrested in fights after Westland football game, 2 officers injured

Twelve high school students were arrested, some of whom have been charged Attack on police officers after a homecoming football game.

According to Westland police, it started with a series of fights after the game. The situation quickly escalated, two officers were injured and reinforcements had to be called in.

Only a fraction of the mayhem officers faced on Friday evening can be seen on a police video.

“The crowd wasn’t listening,” said Deputy Police Chief Robert Wilkie. “They were just looking for a new place to fight.”

Police provided footage of the incident that showed dozens of ninth through 12th grade seniors at John Glenn and Wayne Memorial High Schools.

Camera phones were out and bystanders were undeterred as officers tried to break up one fight after another.

“It was clear they weren’t serious. It was something they enjoyed,” Wilkie said.

Initially, six officers were assigned to the game, but when the fights broke out, Wilkie felt they weren't enough.

“We had to seek mutual aid from multiple jurisdictions to get things under control,” Wilkie said.

As she tried to regain control, things got even worse.

“When the officers tried to arrest people, the officers were attacked,” he explained.

A total of twelve minors were arrested, with the only reported injuries coming from police officers.

“At least one officer was struck multiple times and another suffered a concussion,” Wilkie confirmed.

The principal of Wayne-Westland Schools is also taking this situation very seriously.

“They are not in school at this time while the investigation continues,” said Jen Curry, acting superintendent of Wayne-Westland Community Schools.

Working with police, Curry says there will be changes to the remaining games at John Glenn and Wayne Memorial High Schools.

Changes to be implemented include, but are not limited to, attendance restrictions; Each athlete, cheerleader and band member can only invite five guests.

“We are putting their names on a list and will review them as they come in,” Curry said. “These incidents occurred across the region.”

Westland police also reported that a body-worn camera was stolen in an attempt to break up a fight. The damage has now been secured and the person responsible will be charged accordingly.
