Leighton Meester joins the cast of the second season of Apple's The Buccaneers

Leighton Meester (Single Parents, River Wild) has joined the cast of the second season of Apple TV+'s historical drama series The privateers.

The series was created and written by Katherine Jakeways based on Edith Wharton's unfinished final novel. The film stars Christina Hendricks, Mia Threapleton, Kristine Frøseth, Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Aubri Ibrag and Imogen Waterhouse.

According to the official synopsis, “In the first season of The privateersA group of fun-loving young American girls stormed into the confines of 1870s London, setting hearts racing and sparking an Anglo-American culture war. Now the Buccaneers are no longer the invaders – England is their home. In fact, they practically run the place. Nan (Frøseth) is the Duchess of Tintagel, the most influential woman in the country. Conchita (Boe) is Lady Brightlingsea, heroine of a wave of young American heiresses. And Jinnyn (Waterhouse) is on every front page, wanted for the kidnapping of her unborn child. All girls have been forced to grow up and now must fight to be heard as they wrestle with romance, lust, jealousy, birth and death…issues that concern all women of all ages, no matter what year it is. The last time we got a glimpse of England. This time we are in for a real celebration.”

Totah plays Mabel Elmsworth, Ibrag plays Lizzy Elmsworth, Hendricks is Mrs. St. George and Threapleton plays Honoria Marable.

The ensemble cast also includes Guy Remmers as Theo, Duke of Tintagel, Matthew Broome as Guy Thwarte, Josh Dylan as Lord Richard Marable and Barney Fishwick as Lord James Seadown.

Meester's character is not yet known.

The show has been compared to the Netflix hit in scope and tone Bridgerton, Although director Susanna White spoke to Deadline late last year, she tried to downplay the comparisons. “It's nice to be compared to him Bridgerton because it’s so phenomenally popular, but the ambition was never to do something like this,” she said.

Season two of The privateers Directed by William McGregor, Rachel Leiterman, John Hardwick and Charlie Manton. Jakeways, Beth Willis and Susanna White serve as executive producers. The privateers is produced for Apple TV+ by The Forge Entertainment, a British company owned by Banijay.
