Hurricane Kirk is monitoring the Gulf for development and strengthening

The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking Team is tracking several features across the tropics. The strongest of the systems we are tracking is Hurricane Kirk. Kirk is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane on Thursday as it moves west-northwest across the open Atlantic. Based on his location and movement, Kirk does not appear to pose a threat to the landing. The closest area we need to monitor is in the Caribbean Sea, where a low pressure area could form over the next few days. As of Wednesday, there is a 40% chance that this area of unsettled weather could develop into at least a tropical depression over the next seven days. Because the disturbance takes several days to form, it is too early to determine a specific track or intensity, but everyone on the U.S. Gulf Coast needs to watch it closely. Regardless of developments, heavy rains are possible in Florida through the weekend and early next week. The latest area we are observing in the tropics is a tropical wave in the Far Eastern Tropical Atlantic with a 90% chance of developing over the next seven days. The disturbance is not currently considered a threat to landfall. Count on the NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Team to keep you informed about possible tropical threats.
