WhatsApp introduces filters and backgrounds for video calls

Not long ago we mentioned that WhatsApp was working on AR effects and filters for video calls. Now they are officially launched, out of beta and available to users.

10 filters and 10 backgrounds to choose from

Meta's own messaging app adds a fun twist to video calls with new filters and backgrounds. Now you can change your background or apply a filter during your calls to make the experience more personal and engaging. The filters aim to add a playful vibe to your video calls, whether you want to add a splash of color or an artistic flair. As for the backgrounds, you can keep your real surroundings secret and virtually stay in a cozy café or a stylish living room.

You can choose between 10 filters and 10 backgrounds to spice up your calls. Filter options include:

  • Warm
  • Cool
  • black and white
  • Slight leak
  • Dreamy
  • Prism light
  • Fisheye
  • Vintage television
  • Frosted glass
  • Duo tone

Background options include:

  • Blur
  • Living room
  • Office
  • cafe
  • Pebbles
  • gourmet
  • Smoosh
  • Beach
  • sunset
  • Celebration
  • Forest

WhatsApp is also introducing touch-up and low-light options. These features naturally enhance your appearance and brighten your surroundings, making your video chats more lively.

To use these effects during an individual or group video call, simply tap the effects icon in the top right corner of the screen. This will present you with a selection of filters and backgrounds to choose from.

I think it was high time for WhatsApp to introduce these effects and filters, especially the ability to change the background during a call. With this update, the app finally catches up with many competitors who have been offering these functions for some time.
