Judicial inquiry launched into controversial death of sexual assault accused in Badlapur | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The state government has appointed a single member Justice Commission led by Dilip Bhosaleformer Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, with the probe into the death of the accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case. The accused was shot dead by police in an exchange of fire on September 23 while he was being transported there from Taloja Jail Thane Crime Branch in a police vehicle.
The commission will examine the sequence of events that led to the death at Mumbra Bypass and determine whether an individual, group or organization was directly or indirectly responsible for the incident. The inquiry will also examine other related issues and suggest short- and long-term measures that police can take to prevent such incidents.
Jail officials said they handed over the accused to senior crime inspector Sanjay Shinde in “good condition” following a court order. The accused was taken to the Thane crime branch as part of an investigation into another case involving his former wife. During the transfer, the accused API Nilesh More is said to have snatched the service revolver and fired three shots at police officers, injuring More. In self-defense, Shinde shot the accused, who was later declared dead in the hospital.
The government has asked the commission to submit its report within three months. Earlier, Dilip Bhosale was assigned to lead an investigation into the collapse of an advertising hoarding at a petrol pump in Ghatkopar on May 13, in which 16 people died. —Vijay V. Singh
