Three NELA Sheriff's Departments will receive grants to combat the litter problem

BATON ROUGE, La. (KNOE) – Three sheriff's offices in northeast Louisiana parishes are among seven parishes that received 2024-25 trash control grants from Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.

Sheriff's offices in Jackson, Lincoln and Winn parishes received funding through the KLB Sheriff's Grant Program. Other sheriff's offices include those in Cameron, East Feliciana, Livingston and St. Helena parishes.

KLB's Sheriff Grants Program works to combat litter by providing sheriff's departments with money for litter control vehicles and trailers, carts, safety signs, security cameras and litter removal supplies.

“Louisiana law enforcement agencies are increasing their efforts and prioritizing litter,” Nungesser said. “This grant will support their cleanup efforts and we look forward to seeing positive results from their hard work.”

A 2023 study by KLB found that there are 143.8 million pieces of trash on Louisiana's roads, with highways being the most polluted road type with an average of 10,178 pieces of trash per mile.

“Trash begets trash,” said Susan Russell, executive director of KLB. “Research shows that a littered site leads to more waste and a clean site discourages it. The Sheriff Grant Program supports our sheriffs in their efforts to improve roadside trash cleanup.”
