Man accused of shooting and killing neighbor's dog

GREENE COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) – Sheriff's deputies arrested a Paragould man after they say he shot a dog multiple times and then threatened to shoot the animal's owner.

Greene County District Court Judge Daniel Stidham found probable cause to arrest 49-year-old Christopher Rannals on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats.

On September 28, officers were called to a Greene County address regarding the shooting of a dog.

According to the affidavit, surveillance video of the incident showed Rannals sitting in the back of his truck at the end of his driveway, facing the highway.

“In the video, the potential defendant fires multiple shots at a dog across the street that is playing in a ditch,” said Lt. Ashley Kulin. “In the video, the dog can be heard crying after a few shots are fired until a final shot is fired and the dog stops crying.”

The dog's owner and Rannals reportedly “exchanged words” about killing the dog.

Kulin stated that the owner retrieved a firearm from his apartment and then walked to the end of his driveway where the two men continued to talk.

According to the affidavit, the dog's owner did not point his gun at Rannals; However, the video showed Rannals pointing his gun at the owner and saying, “If you put the muzzle up, I'll fucking kill you.”

Kulin said the dog's owner then retreated next to an excavator on his property and waited for emergency responders to arrive.

Rannals is being held without bail at the Greene County Detention Center.
