Gas leak in Kansas City forces brief school evacuation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Academie Lafayette school administrators briefly evacuated their Oak Campus near the Oak Meyer Gardens neighborhood today due to a gas leak.

A construction crew encountered a 2-inch gas line shortly after 10 a.m., prompting the evacuations – the Oak campus is near East 69th Terrace and Oak Street.

The Kansas City Fire Department reported that no readings of elevated gas levels were found within the school. The decision to evacuate the school was made out of precaution, officials said.

Spire Gas arrived on scene to repair the broken line.

Due to 8 mph winds coming from the south, several calls were received from the north regarding the strong smell of gas.

No injuries were reported.

KCFD will remain on site until the flow of natural gas is stopped.
