What caused the data breach at Empereon Constar?

The Empereon Constar data breach was recently announced and more information is expected in the near future. However, Empereon Constar's filing with the Maine Attorney General provides some important information about what led to the breach. According to this source, on July 22, 2024, Empereon Constar learned that a partner company's computer system showed signs of unauthorized access. In response, the partner company secured its system and subsequently launched an investigation to learn more about the incident and any consumer data that may have been leaked.

Through this investigation, the unnamed partner company discovered that an unauthorized actor had gained access to an archived dataset containing a limited number of Constar files, including files containing sensitive consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to unauthorized parties, Empereon Constar reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were affected. This process was recently completed and on September 27, 2024, Empereon Constar sent personalized data breach letters to everyone affected by the recent data security incident. While the data breach letter on the Maine Attorney General's website does not specifically list the types of data that were compromised, the personalized data breach letters should provide victims with a list of the information belonging to them that was compromised.
