New equipment is intended to support the police in drug testing

BLACK ROCK, Ark. (KAIT) – The Black Rock Police Department is implementing new equipment to make investigations easier.

The device is called the TruNarc Handheld Narcotics Analyzer and is designed to detect controlled substances from materials such as clear bags and other items.

Chief Bryan Archer said it also helps with officer safety.

“It's for officer safety because now no part of the substance has to be scooped out to test it,” Archer said. “You can actually take this and stick it on the package, and it sends a laser and analyzes what’s in the package.”

Chief Archer said the department was able to purchase this new technology through the Opioid Recovery money

“We acquired this with the Opioid Recovery Fund. They bought 33 for the state of Arkansas and we had to pay for one and we got one,” Archer said.

The department has not yet deployed the technology on site.
