Video shows Lebanese police officer saving child's life

LEBANON, Tenn. (WSMV) – After just over a year with the Lebanon Police Department, it didn't take long for Officer Abigail Jones to discover that every day has its own share of unique calls.

“No two days are the same,” Jones said.

She says the job is a calling for her. That call led to her being the first on site at Crosswinds Apartments on August 16th.

Officer Jones found a mother holding her 12-week-old baby, Rhylee, who was not breathing. Based on the details of the 911 call, she had to act quickly.

“It says, 'The baby is sucking from the bottle,'” Jones recalls. “So that means chest compressions?” No. It means slapping.”

Less than 30 seconds after asking Rhylee's mother if she was breathing, the baby started crying.

“You're so in that moment it feels like a long time has passed,” Jones said. “I’m just a normal person and I had the opportunity to use the training I gained here with the Lebanese Police to save a life.”

She received a life-saving award for her actions just a few weeks ago, but said she was just doing her job.

Rhylee's mother sent WSMV4 photos of the baby and thanked Officer Jones for the quick action that ensured her little girl can grow up.

“That’s what this job is all about,” Jones said. “It helps people. And knowing the story ends is icing on the cake, like there’s honestly nothing better than that.”
