A dog was shot by a police officer after attacking a child, according to BCSO

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A dog that was shot during an attack by a sheriff's deputy Tuesday night was the subject of another incident last year, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

The previous incident occurred in October 2023, a BCSO report said. However, the report released Wednesday morning did not provide any details about this specific case.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, a sheriff's deputy shot and killed the dog during an encounter in a neighborhood in northeast Bexar County, BCSO said.

According to a report, the deputy responded to a call about a 3-year-old boy who was bitten by a dog outside his grandparents' home in the 6900 block of Lunar Way.

The family had just left the house when two dogs attacked them, BCSO said.

Although the grandparents tried to protect the child, the dog bit his lip, the report said.

The family then took the child to a hospital as a precaution.

According to the report, the officer initially attempted to use a Taser on the dog, but then fired his weapon at the dog after it charged at him.

A trail of blood still visible in the neighborhood Wednesday morning showed the wounded dog walking down the street and collapsing.

The second dog ran away when the shooting began, the report said.

A neighbor who did not want to show his face on camera told KSAT shortly before that he had had an encounter with the animals himself. The neighbor described her as aggressive.

“The one they shot came closer and started barking at me,” he said. “I told them to leave the yard.”

The neighbor believes the dogs then walked down the street where they attacked.

“I thought I heard the baby crying and the dog barking, and then I heard the three shots,” he said.

Edward Smith, meanwhile, was in his own home, just steps away from the hustle and bustle.

Smith assumed the sound of gunfire was construction noise until he looked outside.

“I saw the dog laying on the sidewalk, and I saw the other officers over in the driveway taking pictures,” Smith said.

After speaking to officers, he learned the details of the incident and described the whole ordeal as “sad.”

Smith said at least one of the dogs looked familiar and may have belonged to someone who lived in the neighborhood.

The sheriff's office said the dog that was killed was microchipped.

Investigators said when they called a number associated with the microchip, they spoke to a woman who claimed to have recently “owned” the dog.

However, when they went to this woman's listed address, they said that the people in the house did not know her.

BCSO did not immediately find information about the second dog that allegedly ran away.
