MLB Playoffs Expert Picks, Odds, Wednesday Game Schedule: Tigers, Royals, Mets see series odds change after Game 1 wins

The first games of the 2024 MLB Wild Card Series were a story of underdogs beating the odds. In three out of four series the chances changed on Tuesday evening.

The Detroit Tigers went from +155 underdogs to -175 favorites after defeating the Houston Astros 3-1. The Kansas City Royals had a close game against Baltimore, but held the Orioles scoreless with a 1-0 win, increasing the Royals' odds from +145 to -225. The New York Mets had the decisive Game 1 among underdogs with an 8-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Mets now have a -300 lead to win the series, a significant change from +115 before Game 1.

The only favorite to actually win on Tuesday was the San Diego Padres in the final game of the day. They earned a decisive 4-0 win over the Atlanta Braves and are now the -400 favorite of all four wild card series to advance to the next round. The Braves were unable to use left-hander Chris Sale in Game 1 because he is dealing with previous issues.

Heading into day two of the Wild Card round, the Tigers' concern is that they have already played their ace of aces, Tarik Skubal. He was the key to winning Game 1, but can they keep it up? The oddsmakers seem less confident as the Astros are the favorites to win Game 2 and the odds for the series aren't far from even. The Orioles are also the favorites in Game 2, even though they are now officially the series underdogs.

The Mets vs. Brewers odds are even for Game 2 late Tuesday night, with Sean Manaea on the mound. The Padres are only slight favorites for Game 2 against the Braves, who will have Max Fried on the mound and a little more rest since their doubleheader on Monday.
