Bodycam video shows police saving life of suffocated baby

A police officer in Texas is being hailed as a hero after using his body-worn camera to save the life of a choking baby. Spring Branch ISD Police officials say proper training and quick thinking led to the nearly nine-month-old child being saved by Officer Juan Pedraza. It happened in August outside an elementary school in Houston. Police had been called to help a baby who was choking on a piece of plastic. Pedraza was the officer who responded and his body camera captured the rest, which was shared with KPRC. Spring Branch ISD Police Chief Larry Baimbridge said he was proud of his officer and glad the body camera gave the public a chance to see his heroism. “You know, before the days of body cameras, these things weren't well documented. You heard about it, but you didn't see it, and now you can see it,” Baimbridge told KPRC's Mario Díaz. The video shows Pedraza working for minutes to remove a piece of plastic from the little boy's throat. Baimbridge said Pedraza jumped in to help without hesitation: “You don't have a chance to take a time out.” You don't have a chance to get on the phone and say, “What should I do?” “The baby “It's better to know in advance and take immediate action because every single second counts,” Baimbridge said. As the body camera video plays, the silence is broken by the sound of a baby crying. “Not my favorite sound in the world, but at this moment he’s breathing. The baby is crying, it is breathing,” the chief said as he heard the child crying in the video. Pedraza was honored last week by the school district where the incident occurred.

Pedraza was the officer who responded and his body camera caught the rest on camera, KPRC was told.

Spring Branch ISD Police Chief Larry Baimbridge said he is proud of his officer and is pleased that the body camera gave the public a chance to see his heroism.

“You know, before the days of body cameras, these things weren't well documented. You heard about it but you didn't see it, and now you can see it,” Baimbridge told KPRC's Mario Díaz.

Baimbridge said Pedraza jumped in to help without hesitation.

“You don’t have a chance to take a break. You don't have a chance to answer the phone and say, 'What should I do? The baby is suffocating.' “It’s better to know beforehand and take immediate action because every single second counts,” Baimbridge said.
