The football game in Bennettsville was canceled due to a suspected shooting

Police are closely investigating an incident Wednesday night at a football game in the area of ​​Carroll Field in Bennettsville that resulted in play being stopped.

Bennettsville Police Lt. Shawn Lucas said some people at the game heard what they thought was a single gunshot in the distance.

Lucas said officers investigated the situation and did not find a shell casing or anything to indicate a shot was fired.

Marlboro County Administrator Tony Clyburn shared the following information about the incident with council members via email:

“There was a single gunshot incident this afternoon. At approximately 5:45 p.m., shortly after the 5U and 8U football games began at 5:30 p.m., a single gunshot was heard from the direction of McLeod Street. Two Bennettsville city officials were on hand to watch their children compete. They immediately ran in the direction of the gunfire, weapons drawn, while parents pushed their children from the field into their vehicles. The entire area was cleared as officers searched the area for potential shooters. Neither our children nor their parents were involved in this incident and everyone present was able to leave the premises safely.”

Several parents said what they heard was very loud and it was a scary situation.

They hope the police will get to the bottom of what happened.
